emotions &
technology
Project EMOTE is a research-based initiative arising out of Cardiff University, in collaboration with the Wolfson Center for Young People’s Mental Health and Grange Pavilion. It is part-funded by the UKRI Harmonised Impact Acceleration Account.
Our aim is enrich our understanding of how interacting with various digital technologies, from social media platforms to chatbots, shapes our emotional lives and our relationships with ourselves and others.
It has become a cliche to say that digital technologies have changed our lives. Many of us can barely imagine how we would socialise, work, learn, or entertain ourselves without them.
But these are not neutral tools. They shape how we engage with the world, with other people, and ourselves.
The aim of Project EMOTE is to improve our understanding of how using digital technologies influences our emotional and social lives. We engage in philosophical research on emotions, technology, interpersonal relations, language, and aesthetics to advance our understanding and to produce resources to help us reflect upon and choose how we integrate technology into our worlds.
